How to protect your home from bushfires

Out in the blue mountains, bushfires are a frequent and dangerous threat to homes. There are a number of regulations you must comply with to build a home out there. This interactive lists the rules while the backdrop is this monstrously safe house built with uncountable costs. It's still cheaper than being in the city.

http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/william-tyrrell-investigation-highs-lows-and-false-hope-12-months-on-20150903-gjenjz.html

The search continues for William Tyrrell. I made a video recap of the investigation over the past year.

The first of many -- a successful implementation of our flexible height iframe. woo! yes. the designs are unlocking before me. so much possibility. Also here's all the best restaurants in Sydney. They get hats of they're good. Lots of hats if they're very good.

overcrowded prisons in Australia

Something new! gifs. I made 5 animations uploaded onto the article as gifs to illustrate the prison overcrowding statistics.

continuing my series of sports guides. mixing it up a bit. without team logos I needed to use the player as the identifying brand.

Super Sarnie

that's right, 'sarnie' means sandwich. and we wanted to talk about some tips from the restaurants who make the best sandwiches in sydney. i got to make an illustration that showed up on print and then adapted it for online. if you click on the sandwich, it will explode with good advice.

http://www.goodfood.com.au/good-food/top-10-eat-out/sydneys-best-sandwiches-2015-20150806-gisqu2.html

There's also a very similar, yet different one I adapted for Melbourne.

the final tweets of cecil the lion

it was an in the moment kind of thing. a journalist wrote a bunch of fake lion tweets - unlike all the real lion tweets. i styled our own article page to look like twitter posts. i liked it because of the surprised lion king graphic. the whole cecil issue was pretty frustrating otherwise.

I made the intro to a series of interviews of people in the Sydney taxi industry.

the goal: make the best intro. success? well. it's ok.

Hospital birth stats

http://www.smh.com.au/national/health/failure-to-cut-medical-intervention-rates-in-childbirth-20150725-gikdnn.html

There's an uncomfortable amount of information about how babies are born in NSW. Delve deep at your discretion. There are three charts - all SVGs that transition

Nat'l Geographic kids quiz

http://www.smh.com.au/national/can-you-pass-the-national-geographic-kids-quiz-20150726-gikiu0?9287324

This is just my regular quiz format I made a while back for Les Miserables and the gay pride Mardi Gras quiz. However! the Sun Herald is running a National Geographic promo, so we got to skin our content look like their stuff - to inspire the paper purchases. The custom splotchy sun background was pretty exciting to make into a repeating background tile. And all the images get to be in colorful circles! really cheered up my day.

Diplomatic impunity

http://www.smh.com.au/national/diplomats-rack-up-thousands-of-dollars-in-unpaid-parking-and-speeding-fines--20150711-gi8etp.html

Diplomats are coming to Australia and breaking the law with very minor traffic infringements. But then they don't pay up. So, we pooled all the fines and fees for the top 40 countries out there defying Aussie rules and principalities.

USA is tied with Egypt for #8 with 7 unpaid fines.

Oil has never looked so good

I love working with content that looks this nice. I was given 13 pro shot photos of oil in varied containers. (exempt is the olive oil - it's actually canola oil that I have photoshopped - the only two in the same containers).

web version

The perpetual battle is mobile content. Since these little interactives are iframe'd into a page that will display web and mobile content interchangeably, I need to divine a way to display the same content on a narrower screen that cannot get deeper. This one is a success story; I got a bit smarter. The trick is to think small first, then expand for web. That way you make sure everything fits the lowest common denominator.

Council amalgamation

http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/minister-toole-warns-councils-to-look-to-the-future-and-seek-mergers-20150628-ghzt90
A recent issue in NSW that has been perpetually simmering, for what feels like the whole time I've lived here, is 'Council Amalgamation.' The state proposed merger of many clusters of smaller councils to a few large government bodies. A few stand to gain and many think they stand to lose if this happens. It looks more efficient, but is the primary job of local government efficiency?

Winter is coming - what to do for the next three months

This project came up really fast. I had to flex my spreadsheet muscles and crank out a very concise way to display a rather large amount of information - also had to be flexible for the varied phone sizes to which we want to cater to fully. Also the print version was done, so the colour layout was meant to reflect the prior paper visual decisions.

20 Things

For the entertainment section - an eclectic collection of events and features on this week in Sydney. The aim is to make this into an easy to update template so we can make this weekly.

Alcohol sponsorship in sports

I tried to make a classy alcohol cabinet to hold all the top sports sponsors drinks. Wood paneling seemed appropriate.

MH370 Search Areas

This will be attached to several articles as the MH370 disappearance anniversary rolls around on Mar 8, but I thought I'd attach it to the article all about science. The article isn't just cool because my sweet interactive is attached - it also is informative scanning the ocean's depths!

gay quiz!

How much do you know about Sydney's Mardi Gras? Well, for one, it's not connected to Lent; it's a gay pride parade. It also seems to be a bit of a cultural phenomenon around town. I helped make a quiz to commemorate this super gay event:

NRL footy quiz

I've made two of these quizzes - and I'm sure there are more to come. The folks over in the sport department saw a quiz of a similar design online and asked me to repurpose and design a quiz for NRL trading cards. The first quiz did so well, we've pulled out the most obscure cards for the 'masterclass' version.

Good luck!  You can share your score with friends and family on facebook after completing the quiz thanks to my dynamic social updating script.

NRL season preview - 2015

Who's ready for some football? No! It's time for NRL.

http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/league-news/nrl-2015-season-preview-20150219-13jf3b.html

The real challenge with this assignment was to make the 16 NRL teams look good together.  I tried alphabetical order. I tried greying out the team colours to maybe make the logos more recognisable. But in the end - rainbow order prevailed. Rainbow order showcases the most exciting parts of any professional sport: the logo and the team colours. Also the order may help users remember their team location when they revisit the page.

Top 10 Movies of 2014

http://www.theage.com.au/entertainment/movies/the-10-best-movies-of-2014-20141224-12dimw.html

Complicated rehash of the 25 things for summer and 2014 music interactives.
Originally the movie trailers were given to me as iframes - but it turns out you cannot command a video in an iframe to stop or pause or play - instead the video must be inline the page.
I had to go each movie asset/trailer in the online content system, suppress the ads, grab the right size clip and find the thumbnail. There are about forty videos amongst all the reviewers and the main page. Enough complaining, you can find the interactive a little ways down the page.

2014 NSW Schools Stats

A big pile of statistics - mostly sorted and illustrated by Remi, then converted into online content by me.
